Plan / A BACKPACK TROOPS GUIDE

Plan a first walking day without overfilling it

For a first walking day, start with one city and one place you really want to see. Backpack Troops uses that starting point, your pace and optional start and finish locations to suggest a day you can review and edit.

Begin with one anchor

Choose a recognisable place from the search results and check that it is in the right city. A museum, neighbourhood or other must-see gives the day a purpose. Add your accommodation or arrival point as the start when useful, and a finish point if you need to return somewhere specific.

  1. Open the first-day planner and choose the city.
  2. Select your must-see place from the results.
  3. Set a pace and optional start and finish points.
  4. Check the credit cost, generate a draft and review the stops.

Review the walking gaps

A short line on a map can hide stairs, hills, crossings or an entrance on the other side of a site. Treat walking times as estimates. Check accessibility and route conditions with suitable local sources, especially if anyone in the group has mobility needs.

On an arrival day, allow for check-in, meals and tiredness. If the plan feels crowded, remove an optional stop before increasing the pace. A single neighbourhood explored comfortably can be enough.

Keep the day easy to change

Before setting out, confirm opening hours for your main stop and any reservation you need. Keep alternatives nearby for closures or weather changes. Save the version you intend to follow and let your group know when the agreed plan changes.

Common questions

Is a suggested walking route guaranteed accessible?

No. Check gradients, steps, entrances and current conditions independently for your needs. Estimated walking times are not an accessibility assessment.

Can I build a longer trip instead?

Yes. Use the longer-trip planner to add dates, multiple destinations, bookings and preferences.
